Students may choose to double major in both Sociology and Criminology, or major in either Sociology or Criminology while minoring in the other.
Sociology and Criminology Double Major:
Students wishing to complete a double major must complete the Declaration of Major form for the College of Arts and Sciences and fill in both majors. Students completing a double major are not required to complete a minor as well.
A double major in Sociology and Criminology requires a minimum of 58 credit hours, including:
Required Core Courses – 10 Credits
SOC 101 Introduction to Sociology (3 Credits)
SOC 210 Introduction to Research Methods (3 Credits)
SOC 211 Quantitative Methods for Sociologists (3 Credits)
SOC 212 Quantitative Methods Lab (1 Credit)
Sociology Required Courses – 9 Credits
SOC 401 Sociological Theory (3 Credits)
TWO of the following three courses:
SOC 301 Social Organization (3 Credits)
SOC 302 Social Psychology (3 Credits)
SOC 303 Social Inequalities (3 Credits)
Criminology Required Courses – 9 Credits
SOC 371 Criminology (3 Credits)
SOC 470 Theories of Deviant Behavior (3 Credits)
ONE of the following two courses:
SOC 271 Criminal Justice (3 Credits)
SOC 370 Juvenile Delinquency (3 Credits)
Elective Courses
Ten other courses offered by the Department for a total of 30 credits
Other Requirements:
A minimum final grade of C- in all courses offered by the Department.
A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 in all courses offered by the Department.
A minimum of31 credits must be earned in residencyin the Department; thus, only a maximum of 27 credits can be transferred from other institutions as eligible credits for the SOCIOLOGY/CRIMINOLOGY DOUBLE major
Sociology and Criminology Major-Minor Program
A minor in either Sociology or Criminology while majoring in the other program requires 12 additional credits offered by the Department to the major program requirements.
6 of these credits must be 300-level or higher, totaling 43 credit hours.
Sociology majors must take SOC 371 Criminology.
