Graduate Program

About the Ph.D. degree in Sociology

The Graduate Program in Sociology at the University of Miami is designed to provide students with theoretical, methodological, and analytical tools required for research and teaching.  We recruit students seeking the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Sociology.  Graduate students are encouraged to choose two concentrations from three substantive areas: (1) Criminology, (2) Medical Sociology, and (3) Race, Ethnic Relations and Immigration.  Although the strengths of the department lie within these major programmatic fields, students may also develop a course of study that meets their specific research interests and career objectives.  Assistantships and Fellowships are awarded competitively each academic year to cover tuition and living expenses.
